The Story Behind “You’re A Little Too Close” – Darla Quinn

Most of my songs start with words.

Usually a line appears in my head, refuses to leave, and eventually I have to do something with it. You’re A Little Too Close was completely different.

This one started with a feeling.

I was on holiday on one of those ridiculously hot, slightly sweaty summer evenings. There was a real Latin feel to the music around me and this little tune appeared in my head. Naturally, instead of just enjoying my holiday like a normal person, I started recording increasingly questionable voice notes so I wouldn’t forget it. 😂

And it followed me home.

For once, the lyrics came later. I knew how I wanted the song to feel before I really knew what I wanted it to say — warm, summery, a little bit flirty and something you might actually want to move to.

Then, somehow, a double bass became involved.

And because apparently I have absolutely no ability to do things by halves, there is now an actual double bass taking up a considerable amount of space in my flat.

But I love what it’s brought to the song.

You’re Too Close feels different from anything I’ve released so far. It’s still very much me, but this time the music led and I followed it.

I genuinely can’t wait for you to hear this one.

Summer might nearly be over, but I’m not quite ready to let it go yet.
